Unicode and Love

Is it possible to get Unicode characters to display?
For example an ä, or a Chinese character, or the snowman. (☃ <- that is the snowman)

Yes, you just need a font that contains them. And make sure they're in utf-8, so check if your editor is set to save the file as utf-8.
