But the problem is not the "love .", but the love.filesystem.mkdir fail (again, see tracker).
Help us help you: attach a .love.

He isn't creating a dir, at least not if I'm looking at the right code...

Yes, but making a dir or not makes no difference: the mkdir is practically a no-op.
