This really going into LOVE?! Seems like wasted time and space to support a hello world type program for those too lazy to type.

I suppose you could see it that way, but on the other hand (in no particular order):

1) there is no expansion of the api
2) current code continues to work
3) makes it easier to learn to love
4) it makes sense. the default font is... default!
5) negligible impact on speed and size of love
6) fits love's goal of facilitating rapid development
7) it's not about laziness, it's about simplicity
8) a useful default behaviour is never a waste

Hey, I'm one of those people!

Many small example programs benefit from being as small as possible, in order to let the reader focus on the thing being taught. In many of these examples, one would normally need text to display some sort of output on the screen, and setting the current font is in most cases not the goal.

Rest assured, LÖVE is not for the lazy. A certain level of commitment is required when choosing LÖVE over something else. Yes ... LÖVE sure can take its toll. But in the end, it's completely worth it. [1]
