Survive! Top Down Zombie Shooter

Post by snake »

I always wanted to write an awesome Zombie Shooter and now I am doing it. 8-)

The attached Love is some small demonstration of basic gameplay and many files will probably need some major rewrite in the future.
Currently you can fight your way through endless waves of Zombies with two different weapons.
The Love is for 0.6.0!
wasd for moving
r for reloading

Feedback, Ideas and Help are welcome!

It would be nice if someone could draw some Zombies and a Player Model.
Some walk/fight animations would be nice but are not essential.
For the player pics i would think about different versions holdings different weapons or something like that.
(if someone knows some free useful Top Down Zombies pics this would be helpful, too)

Comments: very very slow gameplay, the scrolling doesnt happen if you're moving, which doesn't make much sense. Nice that it has reloading and waves and such already implemented.

It seems a bit buggy:

- First time i started the game, i went straight to play, a ran a bit around but nothing happend no zombies showed up. Maybe i closed the screen too fast.
- love.exe crashed when i tried to play after changing several options. (larger resolution, background & blood on, ...) don't know exactly what caused it.
- start menu is can be navigated by mouse but settings screen can't :?
- when I tried to reconfigure the options back to normal and save it, i got an error: lua/options.lua:106 Could not open file.

I don't know if it's me, but it seems you should test it a bit more. I hope my comments can help you with it.

Scrolling does happen but as fast as the player moves currently. 8-)

Sometimes Zombies are hard to find, i will make some kind of radar or mini map.

There is no background file so it crashes, your have to first draw one yourself. :P
Should have disabled the option, sorry.
(Ah and there is now blood, too)
All other options should work.

Yeah. :P

And yes i should test more.

0.6.1?
I am not able to test in 0.6.1 myself since it doesn't run for me.

Edit:saving options works, cant tell what you could have done Virox

Edit2: should work now with 0.6.1 (thanks bartbes)

nice :)

maybe it could use some landmarks (trees, rocks) so it's easier to know where you are going

UPDATE:

- Thanks to Textmode it has now a Background :)

- supporting now different gamemodes/levels/level of difficulty
(currently there is only the survival mode and a "speedmode" with higher player.speed and only 1 healthpoint as a small demonstration)

- supporting objects:
static objects
for the player moveable objects
objects the player can pick up (health packs, guns, ...)
and everything destroyable of course ^^

Update:
- Options can now be changed with mouse
- some small changes

Now i am working on a Storymode and an awesome Upgrade System.
For this i need some Ideas from the Community!
So share your Ideas with me.
What is needed to make a Top Down Zombie Shooter awesome?

Oh and there is still the problem that i cant do any art by myself.
So if someone knows how to use Paint or knows where i could steal some zombie pics in top down perspective from than say it.

New Update:
- Storymode (Currently only one Demolevel)
- blood and other effects are now supported (but i have still to make proper graphics for it)
- many bugfixes
- many things i dont remember

Oh and the new zombies and player are made by me so you know that i really cant do any art.
They are NOT the style i am aiming for and will be replaced as i get better with paint or someone else makes some.

(Oh and the weapon box in the Demolevel might be hard to see at first)

Edit:
Small bugfix for OSX and changed to player oriented scrolling.
(if anyone wants still to use the old scrolling method i will add a options in the options menu)

Edit2:
more bugfixes
