You could try burning it on a CD (or onto a usb key) and run it directly from there, without installing it... And I can assure you, Ubuntu is not so hard

Rather than installing a new os, make sure you're using fully up-to-date graphics drivers, that might just be enough.

I don't know if he is, but I'm using updated drivers on both Windows XP and Windows 7 and I can't do anything. I use a goddamn generic driver on Ubuntu and it's faster and supports npot&canvases...
