Re: Favourite unique games

I also want to add The Talos Principle . It's a fantasic 3D puzzle game (a lot in the vein of Portal 1 & 2), but with lots of secrets, fun mechanics, and lots of ways to attempt "unintended" things (that you later figure out were totally intended!). And it doesn't hurt that the visuals...

Re: If statement and Goto

Generic states (instead of "level 1", "level 2", etc) is pretty much what I was talking about and making an example of in my post above. Have a look at the code to see one example of implementation. My UI elements suck, but the game state design & implementation is pretty sol...

Re: Into The Forest - A Ludum Dare 48 Game

Seems like an interesting game, thanks for sharing! And really nice artwork, UI, etc. I don't love the design decision that you can't turn your flashlight back on until it's fully recharged, but that's really my only complaint. (That, and the fact that it lagged hard the first time I played - but it...

Re: Favourite unique games

... This reminds me of another one of mine( I have many "one of mines" ), RimWorld. https://rimworldgame.com/images/screens/HealthTab_w.jpg https://www.pcinvasion.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Rimworld-Logo-800x400.jpg It has an AI that creates procedural generated story that controls th...

State Machine demo!

Hey all, I've been playing with states and overlays (not sure if that's the right term). I finally hammered out a decent state machine with less-elegant overlays (mini-states that can be stacked up arbitrarily). It was mostly a learning process for me, and it qualifies as a creation, so I'm positing...

Re: If statement and Goto

Here's a demo of a state machine. The only states are Fail, Load, Menu, Play, and Quit. It will generate an arbitrary number of levels for the player. I threw in a couple fun effects like a fade-to-black transition in the Quit state. Most of the code is well structured (in my opinion, haha) but some...

Re: Trouble with screenshots

The real problem here was that 'release' does not result in a falsy (i.e. false or nil) value, but you were checking for falsy in some places. I'd tested doing a print() command with the variable after release, and got NULL every time. I assumed (incorrectly) that would not evaluate to true. Seems ...

[SOLVED] Re: Trouble with screenshots

pgimeno to the rescue again! Thanks!!

I had no idea objects worked like that. I thought that calling :release() was enough. Is there ever a use case to call :release() and not set the variable to nil (or whatever)?

Trouble with screenshots

Hi all, I was working on a sample state machine / crappy game demo as a followup to this post of mine. I decided to use a screenshot for fun to make some transition effects, and it seems like Love is refusing to make more than 1 screenshot. It either crashes (if I release the old screenshot) or it s...

Re: Efficiently drawing a grid map

I thought sprite batching became automatic in Love a few versions ago? Am I mistaken about what that meant? I mention that later on. https://love2d.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=240186#p240186 Manual batching is still available. As I mention in that post, I'm not sure whether it improves performance o...
