Awesome! I felt like that too, originally. There are going to be dozens - if not hundreds - of ways to accomplish this. The "best" will be determined by your desired outcome. Do you want random blobs? Seams of ore that branch? Tiny specs here and there? etc... You could certainly use a cellular automata (you'll get a LOT of ore) or...

Also, the .love is broken - file assets/landinglights.png seems to be missing. (It's there, but the folder is called Assets instead. Capitalization matters on non-Windows systems.)

I second this. White draws attention to the border rather than what's inside it. And boxes are good - hearts would just complicate what should be a simple display IMO.

You can still fade it - just draw the animation sprites to another canvas and use an alpha transparency. Then draw that canvas to the screen. I personally have no experience with particle systems which is why I'd use a table to track animation bits. But either approach should work.
