Differences between this and Torque2D?

Post by nunix »

Or whatever it is they're calling it now... I've messed with t2d a few years ago and finally gave up on it due to terrible developer support. Been looking for something similar ever since.

Language:
Torque2d uses TorqueScript (propietary, fairly ugly language).
LÖVE uses Lua (more general language that doesn't suck balls).

Integrated Editor:
Torque2d has an IDE which also functions as some sort of scene editor.
LÖVE doesn't.

Cost:
Torque2d costs money.
LÖVE doesn't.

Graphics API:
Torque2d has DirectX support (not really sure, I haven't touched Torque in ages).
LÖVE is OpenGL-based, might give trouble with shitty 3d hardware.

Community:
Torque sucks a lot less than it should thanks to its community.
LÖVE's community is awesome, full of good-looking, charming members (like me, for example)

Game Distribution:
GarageGames might even distribute your creations.
rude and mike might give you a virtual pat in the back if you make something cool. The good-looking community too. Maybe.

Licensing terms:
Torque2d has a propietary license.
LÖVE is almost a do-whatever-you-want-with-it product. You can even fork it and make it calculate prime numbers or Pi's decimals each frame just for the hell of it.

LÖVE has rainbows. And someday ponies. Torque2d can't beat that, sorry.

I know I shouldn't post at 6AM after a work crunch. But good-looking developers never apologize, ask John Romero if you don't believe me.

Hah hah! No, that's all good. I'm pretty dang bitter about t2d, so I wasn't spoilin' for a fight, just looking for a reference point. Thanks a bunch. =D

lg.newImage("cat.png") -- made possible by lg = love.graphics
-- Don't force fullscreen (it frustrates those who want to try your game real quick) -- Develop for 1280x720 (so people can make HD videos)
