Most objects are square or almost square so at the time of collision, I'd compare the the centre points between the two objects. If the angle is < 45 degrees then the collision if from above. Simple geometry can fix this.

Inky and Slab come to mind. They are probably mouse focused.

polygon and image are different beasts maybe so it might not be the filter but agree it should be the default option.

I think there is LoS but only after you've committed to an attack. I didn't try escape.
